This presentation describes the physiologic characteristics that define an open abdomen. The common nutritional challenges associated with an open abdomen are identified; as well as, data demonstrating positive outcomes from utilizing early enteral nutrition.

Identify the nutritional challenges associated with an open abdomen.
List the potential benefits of utilizing enteral nutrition in the patient with an open abdomen.
State the indications and contraindications for initiation of enteral and parenteral nutrition in the patient with an open abdomen.
